Goodnight, Good Sir!

A sad day for Modernist photography. Julius Shulman passed away last night at the age of 98. He was truly one of the greats in architectural photography and his presence will be sadly missed.

There is a great article about his life in the LA Times and a great documentary about his work.

Calling All Artists!

Call for Entries: Pershing Square "Art Squared" Public Art Project

The Downtown Artist Project is calling for Southern California artists to submit images of Square art work to be considered for temporary display in Pershing Square's "Art Squared" outdoor, public gallery. The "Art Squared" Gallery displays 8' x 8' prints on vinyl, stretched to fit within large openings of the wall between the main square and the planted areas to the southeast corner of the park, adjacent to the fountain and tower. Only reproductions of all selected artwork will be displayed, not originals, unless the submitted artwork is actually 8' x 8' in size and can be easily installed and is suitable for outdoor display.
24 artists will be chosen, 4 shows of 6 artworks. The reproduction cost is paid for by the organizers and the Downtown Artist Project.
Submission fee is $30.00 for 3 images. All proceeds go toward the cost of producing the shows. Submission deadline for the 2009 season is June 30, 2009. Exhibitions run through the fall of 2009.

For more information and online submission details please visit here or contact Mark Walsh at mark@downtownartistproject.org

Question Time

Here begins our first (of hopefully many) brief interviews of some of our artists here at Phyllis Stein. They act as more of an appetizer, just a little taste of the greatness each artists holds, and hopefully give you a little bit more insight into the brains and beauty behind the artwork.

First up is our beloved Molly Schiot.

What is your Art/Design background?

Glasgow School of Art

Where do you go for inspiration?

To those really dark places that are embarrassing to say aloud

If you could live/work anywhere else, where would it be and why?

In a huge mansion on the beach with my very hot girlfriend.

What are you currently working on?

New Series of Paintings about the Middle East

If you could collaborate with another artist who would it be?

Cindy Sherman

And finally, what is your favorite meal?

Fava Bean Mash Up.
Some of Molly's work is currently a part of our show on now until the 6th of June at PSA. Come down and see the PAPER show!
